Pay it Forward

Found this over at Mother Moon's blog and I like it! So here I am, following her example.

A simple little exchange of sorts. The rules are as follows:

* Create something hand crafted for the first five people who leave a comment on this post who say they wish to participate.

* To play along one must be willing to likewise repost these instructions and also create something handmade for the first five people who comment on their post.

* All gifts are to be created and handed out during 2011.

Just a warning: My gifts are likely to be baked goods. Mostly because that's all I can "hand craft." (Though other options for you are a knitted scarf or hat. Or... Something. Like coasters. Or smudge sticks! ;) hehe) Just be sure to leave your email address so I can email you for your physical address.

Advertising 2 blogs

So I've been meaning to make this post for a few days, but I've been putting it off in favour of doing homework and being productive! (Yay for me!) And watching 30Rock. (Not so yay for me!)

The first blog (and giveaway!) is one that I found a few months ago called Handmade by Jessica who is a fantastic artist. She's just posted a tutorial on carving stamps! And she's trying to get some knowledge out there about her blog, so she's giving away a few stamps she's made herself (!) to some lucky winner!

And also!

If you happen to be following The Whimsical Cottage you know she's running a blog party.

And if you happen to be participating in said blog party (which involves making pages in an art journal!), you just might be interested in the link above to Jessica's blog so you can possibly win some nifty one-of-a-kind rubber stamps.

Happy creating, either way! :)

a quote

Okay, so I've been without internets (and my laptop!) since Thursday night. Those cursed viruses, you know. A quick recap of our Beltane weekend: drove to my parents' on Saturday morning, went fishing, played outside, painted the toad house and set it up in my garden, said farewell to my brother who is off to be an active military man.

I also started reading Watership Down, which as I mentioned once before is my favourite book. I hadn't read it in almost a year, and since we got the movie in Netflix, I've really been craving it. How odd that I should crave a book like I sometimes crave chocolate. It's just one of those things that will stay in the back of your mind, diving you to distraction, until you give in. So I'm reading Watership Down, the first of many Summer re-reads. In the course of reading this (fantastic) book, I came across a quote about the moon, which I absolutely love. And while it would probably be more appropriate for around the New or Full Moon, I'm going to be a deviant and post it now. :)

We take daylight for granted. But moonlight is another matter. It is inconstant. The full moon wanes and returns again. Clouds may obscure it to an extent to which they cannot obscure daylight. Water is necessary to us, but a waterfall is not. Where it is to be found it is something extra, a beautiful ornament. We need daylight and to that extent it is utilitarian, but moonlight we do not need. When it comes, it serves no necessity. It transforms. It falls upon the banks and the grass, separating one long blade from another; turning a drift of brown, frosted leaves from a single heap to innumerable flashing fragments; or glimmering lengthways along wet twigs as though light itself were ductile. Its long beams pour, white and sharp, between the trunks of trees, their clarityfading as they recee into the powdery, misty distance of beech woods at night. ... [The moonlight] does not reveal but changes what it covers. And its low intensity--so much lower than that of daylight--makes us conscious that it is something added to the down, to give it, for only a little time, a singular and marvelous quality that we should admire while we can, for soon it will be gone again.

Aside from the fact that I love how this is written, I love what it says about the moon. It does not reveal, but changes what it touches. Who has not been changed by the moon, out of those who allow her rays to touch their spirits.

Don't forget! Enter my giveaway! I'll be drawing the name tomorrow afternoon-ish.

Toad Houses

This weekend is Beltane! The beginning of Summer. Okay, not technically, but the growing season has begun and the warmth and sunshine (and thunderstorms) that come with it. And with Summer and warmth and sunshine and thunderstorms come...

Toads.

So to celebrate the oncoming toad-season, Camden and I will be making a toad house or two. My brother is going active duty in the military and is being transferred to a base in Tennessee (not deployed overseas, thank the gods) so Camden and I will be going to my parents' house to bid him farewell this weekend. Which means we'll actually have a place to put the toad house.

Fancy-schmancy toad houses
Less fancy, but still entirely serviceable

Cam and I will be making one (or two) of the less fancy varieties. They're pretty easy to make. Just decorate a simple terracotta however you will, then sink it into the ground an inch or two. It's also suggested that you sink a shallow dish, to hold water, into the ground so the edge of it is level with the ground. Or, one could make a door in said flower pot, then just set it down, bottom up.

I would like to do a May pole, but there are a few factors playing against me. Mainly that it's just the two of us, and I am almost 6ft tall and Camden is only half that. Although, now that I think about it, my brother's kids will be at the house at some point on Sunday... Maybe I'll attempt to fashion a kid's Maypole if the weather is nice enough to allow it.

Also, don't forget about my 100th post giveaway! I've only had two takers so far. Go here and leave a comment to win a (very adorable!) recipe box with recipe
cards, and the book The Goddess is in the Details by Deborah Blake.

Falling up

Yesterday, Camden and I were playing in the kitchen. I was singing the itsy bitsy spider song, and instead of singing the last line "And the itsy bitsy spider climbed the spout again" I sang "And the isty bitsy spider chased after Camden Zachary" and tickled Cam. And then he would sing the song and tickle me. It was adorable!

Then he decided that he wanted to do ring around the rosie. Except, at the end, instead of "We all fall down!" he was saying "We all fall UP!" Which meant I had to pick him up and throw him in the air (aka hold him over my head, which is about all I can manage.) A couple of weeks ago we'd had a conversation about why things fall down and why water always runs off of things and down hill. (The talk: gravity) So it was pretty amusing that he wanted to fall up, even after I reminded him that things (and people) can only fall down. Of course, then we were watching a cartoon where one of the characters made a wish for no gravity, and everything went flying up to the ceiling. D'oh!

And a reminder! Enter my giveaway! Go here and leave a comment to win a (very adorable!) recipe box with recipe cards. Oh, I'm also going to throw in the book The Goddess is in the Details by Deborah Blake.

My first giveaway!!

This, my dear readers, is my 100th post. And to celebrate, I'm having a giveaway!

I saved this once poor, ramshackle recipe box from the thrift store. It was pink and had wooden gooses geese on the front of it, and it was falling apart. I added a few little nails to sturdy it up, removed the geese, painted it this gorgeous green colour, and added the little witch and "Recipes." Honestly, if I wasn't so excited about this giveaway, I'd keep it myself!

The winner of this giveaway will get the box, some copies of my favourite recipes (so far I've put 5 in), and maybe a few other goodies I might find.

I'll draw the winner's name from a hat on Tuesday May 4.

EDIT: I've found an addition to the winner's package. The book The Goddess is in the Detailsby Deborah Blake

Greenman Giveaway at Ramblings of a Newbie Pagan

Jenandollie at Ramblings of a Newbie Pagan is having her very first giveaway! And it's a totally awesome one, too. I'm only posting about it because it will give me an extra entry. If it were up to me, I wouldn't tell a soul about this giveaway, because that means my chance of winning is higher (in my head at least.)

Anyway. She's doling out to the winner a handmade Greenman mask, a Greenman coffee mug, a Greenman magnet, and ceramic Greenman!

(I hope I win.)
