pagan group

For the first time in my life, I'm part of a group.  Of Pagans.  I have gone... 14 years, now, as a solitary traveler, and now my path is converging with others.  Or, if it is not converging, it is at least running roughly parallel within shouting distance of others' paths.  The UU Church Pagans got together last Sunday, and decided to meet at Sabbats to hold ritual, celebration, and just to get together.  We'll also be meeting monthly at the First Sunday potluck, which will be nice.  Ten of us met at that first meeting to decide why we were interested in a group and what we wanted to get out of it.  Our ideas were pretty similar: do ritual, converse with like-minded peoples, learn, and accountability for our own practice (I need this so much!).

Since we aren't forming a coven, just a group of differently traditioned people, we decided to take turns leading the Sabbat rituals.  The first one we have coming up is Beltane, and I volunteered to lead it with my friend Erin (who has also always been solitary) and a woman I've met through the UU Church, who has experience working with groups.  I'm looking forward to planning and doing the ritual!  Hopefully I will be able to get some pictures (maybe I'll make my husband come just for that, hah!).

My Beltane

Well, now that things have settled down a bit and my computer is over its viral infection *grumble* I thought I'd let you all in on Cam's and my Beltane activities. Not that we did much, but it was still a pretty exciting day.

When we finally made it to my parents' house on Saturday, the first thing we did was get in my dad's truck and leave to go fishing! And, surprise, surprise, the fish actually let themselves be caught!

We also saw a small herd of not-so-wild and not-so-tame horses. Under the direct supervision of the stallion, we were able to convince one of the mares to let us pet her. Isn't she pretty?

We also made our toad house! Camden was all sorts of excited about it, and ended up taking my mom (Grammy to him) out to the garden to show her when she got home that night, as well as his cousins when they came to visit. We put it and a frog lamp (that may or may not have been stolen from one of Grammy's flowerbeds ^_^) right next to the 'entrance' of my tiny garden.

Camden was trying to walk along the rocks. The building that it's up against used to be a chicken coop, turned playhouse, turned chicken coop, turned hay storages for horse. But now it just plays the part of abandoned shed/wall for the grapevine.

Toad Houses

This weekend is Beltane! The beginning of Summer. Okay, not technically, but the growing season has begun and the warmth and sunshine (and thunderstorms) that come with it. And with Summer and warmth and sunshine and thunderstorms come...

Toads.

So to celebrate the oncoming toad-season, Camden and I will be making a toad house or two. My brother is going active duty in the military and is being transferred to a base in Tennessee (not deployed overseas, thank the gods) so Camden and I will be going to my parents' house to bid him farewell this weekend. Which means we'll actually have a place to put the toad house.

Fancy-schmancy toad houses
Less fancy, but still entirely serviceable

Cam and I will be making one (or two) of the less fancy varieties. They're pretty easy to make. Just decorate a simple terracotta however you will, then sink it into the ground an inch or two. It's also suggested that you sink a shallow dish, to hold water, into the ground so the edge of it is level with the ground. Or, one could make a door in said flower pot, then just set it down, bottom up.

I would like to do a May pole, but there are a few factors playing against me. Mainly that it's just the two of us, and I am almost 6ft tall and Camden is only half that. Although, now that I think about it, my brother's kids will be at the house at some point on Sunday... Maybe I'll attempt to fashion a kid's Maypole if the weather is nice enough to allow it.

Also, don't forget about my 100th post giveaway! I've only had two takers so far. Go here and leave a comment to win a (very adorable!) recipe box with recipe
cards, and the book The Goddess is in the Details by Deborah Blake.
